Background to the Kitami Event (Please note a self-funded excursion to Kitami is being preapred, should COVID-19 restrictions be resolved)

The main aim of the event is unity against no discrimination by any nation, ethnicity or language, through people  working together for peace and harmony through a "Kigatsuku Soul".  Kigatsuku in Japanese means “an inner spirit to act without being told what to do.” SOUL can be grown by See, Observe, Understand, and Listen (S.O.U.L.) to learn from each other toward.  The SDGs aim isto eliminate poverty so it is only something to see in museums by 2030 as Professor Muhammad Yunus stated in his vision.  It is important to search for the real history of roots of each country and tribe, learning from the heritage of Ainu, Maori, Native Americans, and all persons.

Hokkaido was a place of indigenous peoples collectively called Ainu, before the colonization in the 19th and 20th century by pioneers from the mainland of Japan. Hokkaido was chosen to establish a new country during the Movement for Civic Rights and Freedom in the 1880s. Kitami city in Okhosk area has been blessed with many richs of natures. Kitami is also the birthplace of Professor Ryo Takahashi, our local host.  On the other hand, there have been natural disasters, and human-made disasters such as the Ashio copper mine pollution incident during 1880s. People of Ashio area then moved to Saroma town near Kitami city as Disaster Victims.  This movement of victims is also seen recently due to the  harm caused by radiation in Fukushima, Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake on  11March 2011.  In Sendai we will visit sites of the recovery, and memory, of the tsunami inudation areas.

On the 17 August we will hold a Budo Enbu kai(Martial Art Competition)for Shogido将棋道, Kado華道, Judo柔道, and Kendo剣道 to review the  philosophy of Bushido which is required with Meditation, Prayer, or Yoga or Zen practice. This must be central to Bushido.  Beginners can experience for the first time also. Japan is famous for such a philosophy of Samurai Spirit with no power and no authority but truthfulness and action.

We will also learn from indigenous leaders such as Mr Atsushi Monbetsu on how he has left an office job to make a living as a hunter. It is essential to teach as many people as possible about hunting culture. He remarks, “We must never forget our appreciation for life. Now that I make my living with a gun, the value of life is even closer to my heart.”We will ask questions, such as why Japanese law bans the use of the traditional bow and arrow to hunt animals, or spears to hunt salmon, but allows modern weapons?

Moreover, we will learn from Mr.Masao Nishida in Akan Kotan. Mr.Nishida is the great-grandson of Mr. Uekichi Nishida, who was forcibly moved from Kushiro to the upper Seturi River  (currently Tsurui Village) in 1890. He learnt and teachs Ainu culture throughout  his life. In 1973, he succeeded to Kotan's house and entered a full-fledged Ainu culture activity as President of the Akan Ainu Culture Conservation Society and Lake Akan Ainu Association while running a folk art store. Mr. Nishida actively participates in domestic and overseas performances as a dancer of Ainu traditional dance, a performer of Eucalyptus drama, and a performer of Ainu folklore puppet drama. In recent years, not only the locals, but also the Kamuinomi priests in each region, instructing juniors with an easy-to-understand tone and work, has contributed to the promotion of Ainu culture by fostering successors and raising awareness of Ainu culture. We will also enjoy one of the live performances on 22 August 2019.
